Tips for African American Natural Hair Care
African American Hair often requires lots of extra care mostly because our hair comes in many different textures and generally the curls or tight kinks ( I hate that word) causes dryness and makes the hair weak at that point.
So, with this said.. let me share with you what I read over the internet and talking with a hair stylist that I’ve know for over 20 years.
There are lots of things you can do that’s good for your hair but also lots of bad things. What I’m going to cover is some of both.
- Would you believe that as African Americans, combing can cause hair breakage and loss? When I was told this I had to think. Look at your combs, do you have hair in it. Take the hair out and comb your hair again. Hair is always there. So too much combing can cause loss of hair.
- I feel there’s no need to mention perms. You know that too much perming is bad for your hair. It is, just ask your stylist. Options, go natural. Included is an interesting link below with some cool styles. Point in fact, don’t perm your hair every 4 to 6 weeks. This will definitely cause hair damage and loss.
- Blow drying your hair… My co-worker informed me about a salon in the Chicago area where they specialize in blow drying your hair that makes it look like a perm. She also told me that her main stylist said the heat from the blow dryers are burning the hair and causing extreme dryness. Again, this will cause loss of hair after years of use.
- You must also be careful with braids. Because of the high cost of maintenance sistas have a tendency of leaving the braids in too long. This also will cause thinning and hair loss.
You know I don’t want to to be the bearer of bad news but sistas you just need to be aware of your hair. Everyone hair is different. What you need to know is what options you have in your situation. If you’re wondering what you can do to prevent hair loss and breakage, take a look at African American Naural Hair styles.
